CaliBall TM

CaliBall
is a 25.4mm diameter, high precision silicon nitride ball and kinematic
mount used to calibrate phase-measuring interferometers by determining
the errors in the transmission-sphere reference-surface.
The CaliBall is located with its center at the focus of the transmission sphere and aligned to better than one fringe. A measurement of the ball is taken, the ball picked up, arbitrarily rotated and replaced on its mount. The center of the ball will return to the original position due to the kinematic mount. Another measurement of the ball is then taken. This process is repeated about a dozen times and the interferograms averaged. The average represents the errors in the transmission sphere and interferometer because the ball is extremely round and the small imperfections of the ball average to zero. The calibration can be done in as little as 10 minutes and the result is difficult to dispute. Best used with low F/# transmission spheres. Price:

How to modernize a Zygo® MK-2, MK-3 or MK-4 Interferometer:

(1)
Remove the old vidicon and diode matrix cameras and replace them by a single
modern CCD camera.
A neutral gray filter is required in front of the camera. I don't recommend to make the exposure time too small, because that would freeze the motion of the rotating diffuser disk. (2)
Remove the old 115V transformer and replace it by the ASTRO ELECTRONIC
power supply. This board supplies 2x12V AC for the motors, stabilized +12V
for the CCD camera, and also unstabilized 15V or 30V for a laser power
supply, if required.
(3) For the MK-3 or MK-3, install the ASTRO ELECTRONIC piezo amplifier. For a description see below. (4) The original Zygo® laser power supply can normally be changed from 115V to 230V internally. (5) Adjust all optical parts. Be prepared that this work may take a few days. A description for full adjustment would fill a book ... (6)

How
to modernize a Wyko Siris Interferometer:
The
Wyko Siris is a beautiful small Twyman-Green interferometer.
There
exist several different versions of the Siris, I've seen it with 840nm
semiconductor lasers and with 633nm He-Ne lasers.
The
laser beam is directed by two small adjustable mirrors (with a small negative
lens in the middle between them) to a spatial filter assembly.
